Hi and welcome to Mayfield Lavender!
I am delighted to announce that on 31st March 2008 our lavender field was awarded full organic status by the Soil Association, a recognised body for organic certification. To achieve their recognition we have had to demonstrate that we can farm our lavender within their strict guidelines for the last 3 years.
As we use no chemical pesticides or fertilisers to manage our crop, organic farming can be a real challenge especially when it comes to weed management! Throughout the growing season we hand weed each plant on our 25 acre field. Not a job for the faint-hearted! As well as this we mow between the rows every couple of weeks – about 50 miles in total! Now that’s a relaxing job, especially on a bright summer’s day! (not that we had many of them last year!)
Organic farming is hard work but the results are amazing. Fabulous end product, stunning landscape with contrasting colours and an abundance of biodiversity whether you’re interested in plant, insect or bird life.
Our oil is continually highly rated by aromatherapy and herbalist professionals as well as by our increasing number of hugely loyal customers.
I look forward to seeing you this year and let’s hope for a glorious summer!
The Soil Association
Organic is a ‘whole system’ approach to farming and food production. It recognises the close relationships between all parts of the production system between the soil and the consumer. It works within natural systems and cycles throughout all levels from the soil to plants and animals and it fosters biodiversity protecting sensitive habitats and landscape features.
