2023 Photo Competition winner announced

2024-06-13T11:32:10+01:0020 January 2024|News|

Congratulations to the winner of the Mayfield Lavender 2023 Photo Competition.

We’re thrilled to announce that Rei (@reigninldn) has taken the top spot in our competition, and discovered the exciting news on her birthday!

We chose this photo because we felt it captured the essence of summer at Mayfield Lavender, telling a story through its composition, lighting, and subject.

Rei captured this breathtaking shot using her trusty Sony a7c camera.

She shared her heartfelt story behind this stunning photo: “I’ve always loved visiting flower farms as a way of commemorating my late mother’s ardent love for nature and flowers. I started photography in 2022 as a way of immortalising tender happy moments.”

This was Rei’s second visit to the farm and the photo was inspired by the sweet aesthetics of her childhood storybook ‘Debbie’s Visit to the Countryside’ (1977), written by Belgian author Gilbert Delahaye and illustrated by Marcel Marlier.

Rei said: “I can’t wait to create scenic photos of lavender fields during golden hour in 2024. Rain or shine, lavenders look beautiful and soothing.”

Lavender Theatre

2023-09-01T13:01:24+01:001 September 2023|News|

The Lavender Theatre, a 250-seat open air auditorium, opened at our site in Epsom in July 2023.

Based amidst a field of lavender, the theatre’s first show was Irving Berlin’s classic musical ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ which ran for 3 weeks and included a West End cast and professional orchestra.

It gained rave reviews and will be back next summer with a brand new offering. Watch this space!

★★★★★ Last Minute Theatre Tickets

“SuRie, who I am reliably informed was interrupted by a stage invasion during the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest, plays Annie Oakley softer and more playful than those who follow the standard set by Ethel Merman. Her stage chemistry with McCullagh’s Frank Butler is palpable.”

★★★★★ Musical Theatre Musings

“The Lavender Theatre is a perfect setting, Surie is wonderful as Annie Oakley, her interpretation oozes gumption. Charlie McCullagh’s chemistry with her was spot on with vocals I would happily listen to for days”

Musical Theatre Musings

★★★★★ Fairy Powered Productions

“It was slick and polished and the cast were all spectacular. Surie’s voice is beautiful, and she has excellent comic timing. I haven’t seen a better musical in the West End”

★★★★★ Theatre and Art Reviews

“Director/choreographer Simon L Hardwick brilliantly recreates ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ for the outside stage… SuRie and Charlie McCullagh’s believable onstage chemistry adds additional magic to their outstanding performances as Annie Oakley and Frank Butler”

★★★★★ West End Best Friend

“SuRie is sensational as gutsy go-getter Annie Oakley, she delivers a sensitive and charismatic performance and has brilliant chemistry with Charlie McCullagh’s Frank Butler”

“‘Annie Get Your Gun’ is the perfect choice for the Lavender Theatre’s first season. Energetic and enchanting, hopefully this is the start of a sensational summer space”

★★★★ All That Dazzles

“A joyful and charming show set against a beautiful backdrop which will transport you straight to  Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. To see ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ in this new open air venue felt like a wonderfully special experience” All That Dazzles

★★★★★ Musical Theatre Review

“Irving Berlin’s classic but rarely revived musical, bursting with vitality and vigour, is a breath of fresh, lavender-scented air to launch a brave new theatrical venture – the Lavender Theatre”

“Irving Berlin would have been delighted to hear his best work sung with such clarity – here’s to the Lavender Fields Mob giving us many more musical winners!”

★★★★.5  Box Office Radio

“What a wonderful setting for a wonderful show brilliantly directed and choreographed by Simon Lee Hardwick, a venue where the magic of the stage meets the charm of the great outdoors”

★★★★★ LondonTheatre1

“SuRie in the title role is superb in every respect. She has that rare quality, charisma, surely here is a ‘star’ in the making”

★★★★ Spy in the Stalls

“The newly formed Lavender Theatre are on to a winner with this well aimed revival, that hits the mark. SuRie, as the gun-toting Annie, carries the show – nailing her character with gunslinging accuracy. Gamine, yet sassily aware of her femininity, her charisma hangs over the stage like aromatic gunpowder. Equally believable is McCullagh’s Frank Butler. The chemistry between the two cautions us to stand back while sparks fly yet draws us in close to get a true feel for their inescapable magnetism.”

★★★★ The Stage

“Idyllic setting and star talent.”

★★★★ WhatsOnStage

“The chemistry between the two stars is almost combustible”

★★★★ BroadwayWorld

“Probably the most joyful musical revival you will see this summer.”

★★★★★ Mozart to Musicals

“An absolute treat.”

Mayfield’s new open air theatre

2023-08-21T16:02:01+01:0027 January 2023|News|

The new Lavender Theatre at Mayfield London

Experience a theatre like no other at Mayfield London this summer.

New for 2023 is a 250-seat open air lavender theatre at the home of our beautiful new gift shop and cafe in Epsom (not to be confused with our farm in Banstead).

The Lavender Theatre, based amidst a field of lavender, will open for its inaugural summer season this July and then become home to an annual season of plays and musicals.

The theatre has been co-founded by director Joe McNeice, Mayfield owners Brendan and Lorna Maye and Jonathan Muir.

What’s On

The inaugural season will open with Irving Berlin’s classic musical ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ from July 17, with new direction and choreography by Simon Hardwick (‘My Fair Lady’).

The launch of the theatre will see the completion of a significant investment into Mayfield London’s Epsom site, which already boasts a brand new shop, coffee bar, and a full service glasshouse restaurant due to open alongside the theatre this summer.

More than just a theatre visit

Joe said: “This will be more than just a visit to a theatre. Audiences will be to book a picnic to enjoy among the blossoming rows of lavender as the sun begins to set, before taking their seats in our theatre.

“The whole place looks incredible, just walking about the site is a real treat for all the senses, so our shows have to compliment their surroundings and match the sophistication that the natural landscape has set for us.”

Joe worked behind the scenes at London’s ‘Immersive Great Gatsby’, and was Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre’s Visitor Services Manager until 2022, after graduating from the University of York in 2018.

A landmark location for the Surrey arts

Passionate about developing new shows, particularly musicals, he added: “With no public funding or grants to help us achieve this mammoth project we are relying solely on our Box Office income to build the Lavender Theatre into a profitable business, but we believe that creating a new producing theatre, a proper landmark location for the arts in Surrey, is something worth the investment, for both the local community and the wider industry.

“The location is perfect because it’s actually very close to London, but far enough away to have its own identity, which will give us the opportunity to develop work without the vast expense and pressure that comes with opening new shows in the capital. It’s an incredibly exciting opportunity.”

Brendan added: “We are delighted to work with Joe and Simon to bring a West End quality musical production to our refurbished Epsom Plant Nursery and Cafe.  It’s a big step for Mayfield and we are hoping it will be a big hit with our visitors and a great addition to the Surrey summer events calendar.”
