(And why visiting Mayfield lavender in summer is so special)

Lavender is one of the most recognisable and loved plants in the world. Known for its calming scent, beautiful purple flowers and connection to warm summer days, it has been grown and used for centuries.

But there are also a few surprising things about this remarkable plant that many people don’t realise.

Here are a few fascinating lavender facts — and why experiencing them in person at Mayfield Lavender Farm makes summer so special.

1. Lavender isn’t just purple
While the iconic lavender fields are known for their purple colour, lavender can also appear in shades of lilac, blue, pink and even white.

2. Lavender loves sunshine
Native to the Mediterranean, lavender thrives in warm, sunny conditions. This is why lavender fields look their best during the height of summer.

3. Lavender is known for its calming properties
For centuries, lavender has been used to promote relaxation and wellbeing. Many visitors say the scent of the lavender fields at Mayfield Lavender instantly makes them feel calmer.

4. Lavender smells strongest on warm days
When the sun warms the flowers, lavender releases more of its natural oils, filling the air with its wonderful fragrance.

5. Bees absolutely love lavender
Lavender is a favourite for bees and butterflies, making it an important plant for supporting wildlife and biodiversity.

6. Lavender prefers less attention
Unlike many garden plants, lavender actually thrives when left relatively undisturbed, with plenty of sunshine and well-drained soil.

7. Lavender is incredibly versatile
Lavender has been used for everything from cooking and teas to skincare, oils, perfumes and home fragrances.

8. Surrey has a long lavender history

9. Lavender season is one of summer’s highlights
At Mayfield Lavender Farm, the fields open from 6 June to 23 August, when the rows of lavender are at their most vibrant.

10. Lavender fields create unforgettable memories
Whether you’re visiting with family, friends, or simply enjoying a peaceful walk through the fields, lavender season is a truly special summer experience.

A Cosy Christmas Guide: How to look after your Christmas Tree

2025-11-25T16:06:42+00:003 November 2025|News|

Tips from Lorna

To avoid needle drop, place your Christmas tree somewhere cool – not too close to a radiator or fire. Keep the temperature down, and make sure to water the tree regularly. I also recommend choosing a Nordmann fir, as they’re the best variety for keeping their needles.

It’s always worth buying a fresh Christmas tree because you’re supporting farmers all around the world – and the trees themselves are grown sustainably. They actually create a lovely ecosystem that’s good for the environment, and most responsible growers make sure to plant new trees every single year. Fresh trees also smell absolutely wonderful, and there’s something so traditional and heart-warming about having a real one in the house. And of course, they’re biodegradable too – so once the season’s over, your tree can be composted and turned into mulch, ready to help nourish our parks and gardens for the year ahead.

When you’re choosing the perfect Christmas tree, make sure it’s nice and uniform — something that’ll fit beautifully into your room. The first thing to do is measure the height of your space, because it’s amazing how many people think they can squeeze in a bigger tree than they actually can! It’s worth checking the width too, just to be sure it doesn’t take over the whole room. Look for a tree that’s symmetrical, with plenty of branches so you can hang all your lovely decorations. And if you can, go for a Nordmann fir – they smell absolutely wonderful and always look gorgeous.

If you want your Christmas tree to last right through to Christmas Day — and even into the New Year — make sure you choose a stand with a proper water base so you can keep it topped up. Those are always the best ones. Just check the water each day and give it a little top-up to keep the tree fresh and happy. Try to keep the room a little cooler too, and don’t place the tree too close to a radiator or fire – the heat can dry it out really quickly. My best tip for buying a tree is to pick yours towards the end of November, when they first go on sale – that way, you can take your time finding the perfect one. You don’t have to bring it indoors straight away; just leave it outside in a bucket of water until you’re ready to decorate. It’ll stay lovely and fresh for the big day.

Once Christmas is over, there’s not an awful lot we can do with the tree, apart from putting it out for the council to collect. The lovely thing about Christmas trees is that they’re completely biodegradable. The council will pick yours up, chop it into pieces, and turn it into mulch, which then gets used in parks and gardens all over the country. So, in a way, your Christmas tree lives on – helping other plants and trees to grow in the beautiful green spaces we enjoy throughout the year. It’s rather nice, isn’t it?

✨ And don’t forget – you can come in and buy your perfect Christmas tree from us from the 22nd of November, and we’ll be more than happy to give you friendly, expert tips on how to care for it, right there and then.
