It's National Gardening Week, and the perfect time to plant your lavender. Lavender is a hardy plant that will not only bring great colour and fragrance to your garden but it will give you (and the bees!) lots of pleasure throughout the summer months Best of all, it's low maintenance. Once it's comfortable in its position it needs very little work! Our top 3 tips for lavender planting are: Plant in a sunny position Plant in a well drained soil such as a chalky or sandy soil (if planting in a pot put lots of stones in for drainage) Cut your lavenders back hard at the end of the flowering time (keep the dried flowers for lavender bags or cakes!) If you would like some planting advice, please pop into our shop at 139 Reigate Road, Epsom, KT17 3DW where Carol and Anne-Marie are waiting to see you. We're open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm.

Plant sunflowers and lavender in your garden this spring to reverse the decline of previously common species, so says the RSPB. The bird charity has launched a 'nature on your doorstep' campaign to help reverse the fortunes of species including starlings, bumblebees and hedgehogs. Bee buffet: five of the best plants for wildlife: Sunflowers – impressive to look at and easy to grow from seed, these classic flowers are great for pollinators and are a great food source for birds when they set seed. Cornfield annuals – for just a couple of pounds you can have the glow of red poppies and blue cornflowers within weeks. Mini-meadow – let parts of your lawn grow for a few months, or even better until late summer, and be rewarded with drifts of clovers and other meadow flowers. Lavender – not only a beautiful smell but perfect for bees and butterflies.
