All good things must come to an end and Mayfield Lavender Farm is now closed for the 2023 season.

It will reopen 15th June 2024 (hopefully it won’t be as wet as this summer!)

Until then you can visit us at our gift shop, cafe and nursery at 139 Reigate Road, Epsom, KT17 3DW. It doesn’t have a lavender field, but it does sell all of our wonderful lavender products to transport you back to summer, as well as a lovely cafe to enjoy!

We hope to see you soon.

Mayfield’s new open air theatre

2023-08-21T16:02:01+01:0027 January 2023|News|

The new Lavender Theatre at Mayfield London

Experience a theatre like no other at Mayfield London this summer.

New for 2023 is a 250-seat open air lavender theatre at the home of our beautiful new gift shop and cafe in Epsom (not to be confused with our farm in Banstead).

The Lavender Theatre, based amidst a field of lavender, will open for its inaugural summer season this July and then become home to an annual season of plays and musicals.

The theatre has been co-founded by director Joe McNeice, Mayfield owners Brendan and Lorna Maye and Jonathan Muir.

What’s On

The inaugural season will open with Irving Berlin’s classic musical ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ from July 17, with new direction and choreography by Simon Hardwick (‘My Fair Lady’).

The launch of the theatre will see the completion of a significant investment into Mayfield London’s Epsom site, which already boasts a brand new shop, coffee bar, and a full service glasshouse restaurant due to open alongside the theatre this summer.

More than just a theatre visit

Joe said: “This will be more than just a visit to a theatre. Audiences will be to book a picnic to enjoy among the blossoming rows of lavender as the sun begins to set, before taking their seats in our theatre.

“The whole place looks incredible, just walking about the site is a real treat for all the senses, so our shows have to compliment their surroundings and match the sophistication that the natural landscape has set for us.”

Joe worked behind the scenes at London’s ‘Immersive Great Gatsby’, and was Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre’s Visitor Services Manager until 2022, after graduating from the University of York in 2018.

A landmark location for the Surrey arts

Passionate about developing new shows, particularly musicals, he added: “With no public funding or grants to help us achieve this mammoth project we are relying solely on our Box Office income to build the Lavender Theatre into a profitable business, but we believe that creating a new producing theatre, a proper landmark location for the arts in Surrey, is something worth the investment, for both the local community and the wider industry.

“The location is perfect because it’s actually very close to London, but far enough away to have its own identity, which will give us the opportunity to develop work without the vast expense and pressure that comes with opening new shows in the capital. It’s an incredibly exciting opportunity.”

Brendan added: “We are delighted to work with Joe and Simon to bring a West End quality musical production to our refurbished Epsom Plant Nursery and Cafe.  It’s a big step for Mayfield and we are hoping it will be a big hit with our visitors and a great addition to the Surrey summer events calendar.”

Firstly a huge thank you to everyone that visited us this year.

The farm is now closed for the 2022 season (our gift shop and nursery in Epsom remains open) but the very hot weather certainly brought out a bumper lavender crop this summer which we will use to turn into all of sorts of lovely organic oils, soaps, perfumes, food, drink and more!

The extreme weather did mean the flowers bloomed a lot earlier than previous years but we hope you still managed to come along and enjoy the purple. Lavender actually makes the perfect garden plant because it’s very drought tolerant and doesn’t need a lot of water.

We expect the lavender to come back into season around the end of June / early July next year so we hope to see you then.

After months of hard work, we are incredibly excited to announce the launch of our new website!

A lot has changed about Mayfield Lavender since it was first incoporated back in 2005. We’ve expanded and purchased an additional site, welcomed new faces and introduced new products. We were evolving, but our existing website could no longer keep up… it was time for a change. So, last year, we set out to create a new and improved website that encapsulated our business today.

Fast forward to today

Our new website is sleeker and easy to navigate, with clear links to our extensive range of products. We’re also now able to shout about our new plans with our new purpose-built farm shop and coffee bar.

With its fresh design, improved functionalities, and full services list, we feel our new website gives a clear message about who we are, what we do and what we’re capable of! What do you think? We value your opinion! Take a look around and let us know what you like (or don’t like!) – all feedback is welcome and very much appreciated. Lavender Lemonade

2022-05-10T16:04:13+01:005 May 2022|Recipes|

Lavender lemonade is a delicious floral take on a typically refreshing summer drink. Enjoy it yourself all summer long with our easy lavender lemonade recipe.

Choosing Culinary Lavender
Although all varieties of lavender are edible, some are not as good for cooking. To be safe, stick with English or French lavender varieties, which won’t be soapy or bitter. You can buy our very own culinary lavender right her on our website!

Lavender Lemonade

TOTAL TIME

SERVINGS

The sugar/lemon balance will depend on what types of lemons you are using (Meyer lemons are less tart than regular lemons), and your own preference for sweetness.
While all varieties of lavender are edible, English lavender and Provence lavender are most often used for culinary purposes.

If you use fresh garden flowers, make sure they have not been sprayed with pesticides. Do not use florist flowers.

Ingredients:
1 small handful freshly picked and rinsed lavender flowers, or 1 tablespoon dried lavender flowers
1 cup sugar
2 cups boiling water
1 1/2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 cups cold water, plus more as needed
Ice
Thinly sliced lemons and a few lavender sprigs, for optional garnish

Method:

1. Prepare the lavender flowers:
Cut the lavender flowers from the stems (no need to strip) and place in a medium bowl (preferably not Pyrex, which can crack when you add boiling water).

Pour the sugar over the flowers, and use your (clean) fingers to gently rub the flowers into the sugar.

2. Make the lavender simple syrup:
Pour 2 cups of boiling water over the lavender sugar and stir with a spoon until the sugar has melted. Cover and let infuse for 30 minutes (or up to several hours).

3. Strain the simple syrup:
Strain the lavender-infused simple syrup and pour into a serving carafe or pitcher.

4. Make the lemonade to taste:
Stir in the lemon juice. Add another 2 cups of cold water. Taste and adjust for tartness. Add more lemon juice if too sweet. Add more sugar if too tart. Add ice and more water to your desired level of concentration.

Note that the ice will melt eventually, further diluting the drink.

Add some thinly sliced lemons and a few lavender sprigs to the serving pitcher for presentation if you so desire.

It’s been a while coming but our lovely new purpose built farm shop and coffee bar in Epsom is nearing completion!
We’re hoping to open in mid spring, so in the meantime we’ll share some of the progress we’ve been making over the past few months.
Here’s what it looked like when we started (as a patch of scrub!) and here’s what it looks like today – not quite finished but certainly taking shape!
Stay tuned for more posts coming soon.
